Water Meter Installation

I’m getting bids to install water meters in California. I’ve noticed there is a wide spread on the cost of a meter ($100-400). The least expensive seem to be the mechanical and the most expensive are weather resistant and offer electronic monitoring. Any thoughts or suggestions on the process and what type of meters to use? Anything thing I need to know about doing such installations?

I am going to have them put a meter on the lots and the common areas so that it will be easier to see when there might be a leak.

Thank you, Scott

We use Metron and have had good success. Electronic monitoring is important to us as we have individual septics and the alerts keep us informed if there are water leaks or running toilets in the homes which could eventually overwhelm the systems. Metron sent a tech out to do the installs for a nominal service charge per home.

I remember some chatter on this forum at one point though about California, water meters, Metron, etc. Some state regulations to navigate so you may want to double check. You hopefully get some additional feedback on the forum.

Good luck

Thank you for the reply. It looks like California AB 604 and MRL 798.40 govern water meters and billing practices. I’m not sure if there is more to deal with; it would be great if someone else on this forum has good information.

I’m thinking about using the mechanical water meters since I have city sewer and I want my manager to be moving around the park on a regular basis.

Hopefully, someone will have good feedback on the type of water meter to use since the cost varies so widely. I’m looking at Norgas ($107) and Badger ($242).
