Salt a parks private gravel roads

Does anyone every use salt on their private dirt roads for their park? Will the salt harm the drive or the yard? Is there a better way to combat ice on dirt roads? Here in Indiana we got like 1.5 feet of snow last week. The snow plow cannot get all of the snow off the gravel road. Then when all the snow starts to melt, then freeze again I am getting alot of ice. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I’d call:

  1. a few local plowing contractors, and

  2. your city’s Department of Transportation

… and ask what they recommend.

My guy plows and spreads sand, no salt. Plenty of ice and snow in Canada too.

Sand is the way to go economically speaking. Many of the counties in western Wisconsin have switched exclusively to sand.
