Just curious what everyone’s thoughts are on the various methods of heating a home in the Northern states (I’m in Maine)
When I buy new homes for my inventory I have them outfitted with a propane furnace and range. It’s harder to steal propane versus oil from an oil tank and I was always under the impression electric would be super expensive for the homeowner.
First choice is propane. I have had all existing homes (TOHs) remove oil heating and gave them the option of propane or electric. They all chose propane.
Propane for heat: saves having to buy oil tanks, worry about leaks and theft like you said. I always do an electric stove to avoid anyone leaving the gas on.
Some parts of New England simply aren’t piped for natural gas, and heating oil has been the norm for years and years. I own two parks in Maine and neither area has natural gas service.
I’m in the process of bringing in some new homes to a park in Maine, and we’re going with all propane heating but electric ranges. From what I’ve read and been told, propane furnaces require less maintenance than oil as the fuel burns cleaner. No theft concerns and less spillage risk as well, but those are lesser reasons. An all electric unit would be expensive for the resident, plus the electrical service would probably have to be upgraded to handle the additional load, so I didn’t even consider that. Electric ranges because no risk of someone leaving the gas on and cheap to replace an individual element and drip pan if I happen to own the home.
