Gas Meter Pits and Backfill

Does anyone has a suggestion on how to keep the area around the gas meters clear of dirt backfill in order to maintain proper clearance from the ground (to allow easy emergency shut off)?

I’m thinking of something like a sheet plastic guard inserted in to the ground to act as a barrier. Wondering if anyone has come up with a more clever solution for what I imagine is a common issue.

We have our lawn guy spray a herbicide twice per year to kill the grass in the area we do not want grass to grow to reduce the amount of super technical weed eating, such as the perimeter fenceline. We don’t have issues with dirt accumulation per se, so would need to know what that means here.
